Rando patrimoine -
Allemans
Comberanche.
On

alsaciens.

Allemans
Some words about Allemans
The name :
Had there been a germanic people at one point in time? This could well
be an initial hypothesis. The second is that the origin is found in the term
'mans', a farm. The village is mentioned before the year 1000 in the chartulary
of Saint Cybard (Angoulême, of which the priory of Cercles depended). The
Templars were established in Comberanche in the 13th century, and in 1311 and
1360 both « Alamans » et « Alemani » are mentioned.
History :
Ø
Few remains from protohistory, but a
polished axe and stone circles were found in two hamlets.
Ø
From the Gallo-roman period, there
remain two containers (vats for grape must) in Bonneval
Ø
From the Frank era, an axe-hammer was
found with runes inscribed (trident) dating from 450/470, in Maine du Bost.
Ø
During the middle ages, le chartulary
of St Cybard labels Allemans and
Comberanche as a « commune » under the guidance of the archpriest
of Vieux Mareuil and attests to a
commandery in Comberanche.
In
the 15th century lived the family of St Astier (la Gilbertie d’Allemans) and
then the Jaubert (through marriage in 1416) and Dulaud, originally from the Béarn
who married Sibylle Jaubert.
Ø
In the latter part of the 16th century
Calvanism arrives in the region of Angoulême. Protestantism encounters much
interest from La Rochebeaucourt to Saint Aulaye. Calvin is present in Angoulême in 1534 and
from 1566 onwards the protestant cult establishes itself in Allemans. Dulaud
supports Henri IV and converts to catholicism at the same time as him.
(Cf.English registers).
Ø
During the 20th century ; the outcome
of the Great War was human tragedy and the Second World War sees Allemans cut
in two by the demarcation line. The Germans from the Brehmer division settled
in Allemans on the 26th March 1944 and lay waste to the region (the death of
Dupeyrat).
A story recounts that on the
27th June 1966 a falling meteorite left five fragments of between 21 and 57
kilogrammes in Allemans.

The Dulaud family of Allemans had many
military and philosophers.
Ø
Joseph Morand (1757/1813) was general

The circuit
First stop : Lau Manor House.
Guided visit from the mayor.
Lau manor-house dates from the 16th
century and was occupied until 1939, when it was harbouring Alsatian refugees.
It was then occupied by 200 Germans in 1940. It was connected to the Charente.
In 1944 it was to become the presbytery but the parish priest refused
complaining of two high a rent, and so instead the commune created social
housing (using concrete!!) that was occupied until 2004.
The commune then recuperated a somewhat deteriorated building and
decided to keep it. Seven or eight years later an organization was created for
its conservation. The building is not listed but the group does consult with
the Historical Buildings (Bâtiments de France).
The first task was to demolish the concrete elements. Then came the
restoration; members have worked one Saturday per month for the past five year.
The bakery was also restored and
worked for the first time this year, bread being baked in one of the two ovens.
The park is still being replanted and
in one part there was a merry-go-round, built for the 1960 festivities. The
decorations have been recuperated and the idea is to restore it completely.
Visit :
Ø
The cellar : an underground room
that leads to an identical room beneath the school, with maybe an exit via a
well beneath the library. The Germans occupied this space diring there time as
'customs men' of the region.
Ø
A spiral staircase situated in a tower
grants access to the first floor containing a large room and two smaller ones.
Ø
The stairwell continues granting
access to the second floor beneath the eaves and revealing a remarkable roof
structure.
Second halt : The hamlet of
Savignac l’Allemans
Ø
During the 19th century it was a place
of intense activity. Elie Dupeyrat,
printer of musical scores, returned to the hamlet and combinbed his
activity with a working farm. (There were as many as five musical editors in
Allemans)
Ø
Eliette Sagot, his great-granddaughter
introduced him : His activity covered composition, orchestration and
musical editions for dances. He kept abreast of the times and even wrote some
music for cinema. The printing works functionned from 1840 to 1930. The actual
buildings date from 1873 for the printers and 1897 for the house.
He edited thousands of works
and taught other editors and compositors
He was initially a
violinist, and he crafted smaller instruments and restored them.
His son Léon, a free mason,
continued the trade of instrument maker in Ribérac.
Another of his sons, Atel, took
over the printers in Savignac but was forced to stop due to the recession
between the two wars and the emergence of the phonograph.
ü Cf.
Work by Sylvain Roux for the SHAP present in the archives
Ø After this presentation by
Eliette Sagot, a family orchestra interpreted several songs written by their
ancestor, Elie Dupeyrat. A very moving moment.
Ø
Tour by the owner : He bought the
house after his marriage.
The house dates from the
16th century with modifications made throughout the centuries. It was a small,
fortified manor-house delapidated in the 16th and restored in the 17th century,
with larger windows and a depot on the ground floor. The entrance is probably
16th century.
The house was extended at
the beginning of the 18th century and the dovecote rebuilt. Below is the road
from Lusignac to Ribérac, and the house has gone through changes with new
extensions taking the place of past buildings, and an opening on the lane.
Fourth Halte : Allemans church.
Ø
Dating from the late 12th to the early
13th century, it was completed with buttressing in the 15th century, and the
facade revitalized in the 17th century
Ø
The side chapels were built in the
19th century. The first was patroned by
Ducluzeau de la Rivière in 1852 and the second was patroned by the faithful.
Ø
At the end of the 19th century the
rectangular clock tower was covered by a four sided roof, but in 1905 it
followed the contemporary fashion of
pointed bell-towers and one such was
built in the style of the cathedral St Front
in Périgueux (Abadie or one of his disciples ?).
ü Cf.
note by l’Abbé Brugières.
It
has three bells founded by Vauthier, Master founder in St Emilion : the
first in 1833 of 850 kg, the second in 1858 of 300 kg, and the third in 1880 of
350 kg.
It
has a flat chevet and there are traces of hoards serving in the past as
defensive chambers. It is registered with the ISHM since 1926.
The ramble gathered 80 or so
people and ended with a pot-luck lunch in the Salle des Fêtes in Allemans
